Portsmouth Academy students speak to STEM leaders at the Houses of Parliament for celebration event

July 30, 2025 03:00pm

Students from The Portsmouth Academy joined educators, families and STEM leaders at the Houses of Parliament for a celebration event hosted in the Terrace Pavilion.

The event, held at the beginning of July, was opened by Portsmouth South MP Stephen Morgan, who spoke on the importance of continued investment in STEM education. The evening showcased projects and partnerships aimed at equipping young people with skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Two Year 9 students, Sabriha and Tajkia, represented The Portsmouth Academy and shared their experiences participating in the 5PARK programme, Big Ideas (Solutions for the Planet), and Dragon’s Den-style presentations. Both students reflected on how these opportunities have influenced their aspirations and built their confidence in pursuing future careers in STEM.

Also speaking at the event was Leonie, founder of Amazelabs and a lead partner in delivering the 5PARK initiative. She highlighted the importance of incorporating creativity into STEM through STEAM learning. Samuel, a parent of one of the students involved, gave a personal speech encouraging families and educators to work together in supporting young people’s ambitions in the field.

Laura Watford, of STEMunity, said: “Sabriha and Tajkia absolutely owned that stage. It was amazing to see how far they’ve come and the confidence they’ve built. This is exactly why we do what we do, to help young people realise just how powerful their ideas can be.”

The event brought together schools, community partners and policymakers to mark the achievements of students involved in STEM programmes and to reinforce the importance of widening access to these opportunities.
