Portsmouth Academy students shine in Matilda as first whole school production in 7 years

February 13, 2026 12:44pm

The Portsmouth Academy were delighted to stage ‘Matilda Jr: The Musical’, an amateur production presented by arrangement with Music Theatre International - the first whole-school production in more than 7 years.

With more than 50 Portsmouth Academy students involved in the cast, ensemble, and backstage crew, audiences enjoyed an unforgettable performance across three evenings.

We were also delighted to welcome more than 300 Year 5 pupils from schools from across the city to watch a special open dress rehearsal before the performances took place.

Faith, who’s in year 8, was one of two pupils who played Matilda Wormwood and Alice Pumpernickle in the production said: “It’s my first big production and it’s just really interesting.”

Emily, also in year 8, also played Matilda and Alice and said: “I’ve loved being a part of it because I really like acting and it’s been a really good experience for me to play a main role.”

The production saw over 40 pupils make up the cast, which included year 7 pupil Frankie, who played Bruce Bogtrotter who famously steals a slice of Mrs Trunchbull’s cake.

“It really makes a community, and I get to make lots of friends and eat chocolate cake!”, Frankie said.

The production has been produced by Mr C Young, who spoke of his immense pride in seeing all the pupil's hard work:

“There’s been such a huge team effort with so many pupils and staff involved in bringing this all together”, he said.

“It represents the very best of The Portsmouth Academy and I couldn’t be prouder to see these young people thrive in this environment”, Mr Young added.

Reflecting on the wider impact of this production, Executive Principal of The Portsmouth Academy discussed how this has brought the school together.

“It’s fantastic to see how we’ve been able to provide this wonderful opportunity to so many students. It really reinforces the positive trajectory of improvement across our school”, he said.

“To see everyone involved come together and put on three incredible shows is just amazing. This is a great example of how we focus on every student truly belonging here at The Portsmouth Academy”, Mr Botting added.
