The school, which is proud to have a multi-cultural and multi-faith community, hosted an Eid celebration for hundreds of people across the school.
Food was enjoyed with a large spread of authentic halal dishes while music was danced to, and games were played by those in attendance. Henna hand art was also painted.
Despite Eid celebrations, also known as Eid al-Fitr, signifying the break of a fast at the end of the month of Ramadan for the Muslim community, an invitation was also extended to young people and staff of all or not faiths to explore what Eid is all about.
C. Fraser, who supported with bringing the event together, praised the students for marking such an important moment for the Muslim community.
She said: “It’s hugely encouraging to see students and staff come together to mark the end of their fasting. Every year, we have a cultural day of celebration to promote the diversity within our community and this year we decided to hold an Eid party to finish the week.
“The food which was prepared and shared by staff, students and their families was absolutely delicious and it was a touching moment to see everyone together to eat as one community.”
The Ethnic Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) student leadership team at The Portsmouth Academy presented the idea of having an Eid celebration to the Senior Leadership Team, which was welcomed.
A celebration assembly of the different cultures within the school, as well as class activities, were presented throughout the school day too.
Many attendees at the Eid celebrations had some time to change out of their school uniform and into traditional cultural dress for the occasion.
Mr Woodall, Principal at the Academy, said it was a moment to remember for everyone who engaged with the event.
He said: “It’s at gatherings like this where we are reminded of the fantastic diversity and inclusion here at The Portsmouth Academy.
“One of our core values at the school is focused on ‘Respect’ and this event allows us show respect and support for the Muslim community. What stood out to me was seeing students being hospitable to other pupils; it was warming to see our Year 10 and 11 pupils serving up a wonderful array of food to those present.”
