Mrs. R. Parker, the Head of Dance at The Portsmouth Academy, was recognised for her work to deliver creative opportunities for young people within Fratton at the Inspiring Fratton Awards by Fratton Big Local, held at St Mary’s Church.
Fratton Big Local is a ‘Big Lottery’ funded 10-year project with the aim of making lasting improvements to the area, with the awards ceremony being one of many successful activities for people to enjoy.
Mrs. Parker said: “I’ve worked on a lot of creative opportunities for young people within the community and citywide, so it was lovely to receive this award to recognise the work I’ve achieved with a brilliant team.
“Whether it’s music, dance, drama, or the arts, it has been encouraging to see so many pupils at The Portsmouth Academy – as well as non-students - engaged with creative activities within the community.
“I think it’s important for students to be engaged within the local community. Many of them don’t know what’s going on outside of their door, so creative activities within the community broaden their knowledge of what happens.”
Much of the events Ms. Parker has engaged in teach young people about how to put on a performance, how to rehearse and how to work with others.
Mrs. Parker continued: “I’m really proud of the hard work I’ve done to benefit young people within the community. I’ve worked at The Portsmouth Academy since it was City Girls School for almost 13 years, so to have that recognition of the work I’ve done is nice, and to come back with the staff and pupils congratulating me has been an encouragement.”

“The Inspiring Fratton Awards help us shine a spotlight on local people helping to make Fratton an even more special place to live.
“Volunteers across our community have provided a vital lifeline for those facing challenges or needing more support as times have become tough.
“As we mark our fifth year of the Inspiring Fratton Awards, I want to congratulate all those nominated who have gone out of their way to improve our local area. It is your example that inspires others to do their part in changing the community for the better.”
The Portsmouth Academy is on a mission to ‘Empower Young People to Meet the World’ through its work across various areas. Congratulations, Ms. Parker; we are very proud of you!
