Sail Training Adventures for Year 11

Help The Portsmouth Academy change young lives at sea

This September, ten Year 11 students from The Portsmouth Academy will be given the opportunity to enjoy sailing aboard an ex-BT challenger boat for five days with the Tall Ships Youth Trust.

It’s an opportunity of a lifetime for these young people; not only will the week provide them with endless adventure on the water, but it will teach them in building teamwork and communication skills.

We’re partnering with the sailing charity to enable students who are disengaged in the classroom to become engaged with a different method of learning on the water.

Who are the Tall Ships Youth Trust?

The Tall Ships Youth Trust are the UK’s oldest and largest youth development sail training charity.

Their focus is to help young people redefine their horizons through life-changing residential adventures at sea.

Their four Challenger and ketch vessels sail all-year-round offering a variety of adventures, from youth voyages to day sails and challenging residentials.

How much will it cost and how can people support?

Gratefully, the Tall Ships Youth Trust have agreed a £250 bursary towards the £500 required per head.

This project is proven to positively impact young peoples’ lives for the long term. But we need to raise an additional £250 per participant, so we’re fundraising through events, activities and sponsorship to make it happen.

Sponsor a Sailor:

This sponsorship is designed for businesses to give £250 to ‘Sponsor a Sailor’. This will pay for a young person to enjoy this sea adventure for the whole week. Throughout the event, the team will provide updates about their daily activities. Companies within the community who choose to help will be recognised across the Academy’s digital platforms, including their logo on this page.

Other fundraising opportunities:

From a raffle to cake sales, we will be doing everything we can to provide these 10 young people with an opportunity that will transform their life chances.

If you’re interested in supporting, please contact chantelle.usher@tpa.tsat.uk

What happens if you fundraise more than you need?

This opportunity isn’t just for this year, it’s for the long term. Our ambition is to partner with the Tall Ships Youth Trust to provide hundreds of disengaged students with the chance to join a voyage in years to come.

Any surplus cash will be placed into a legacy fund for future sailing residentials.

This page will be regularly updated, so please check back for more details soon.
